A promising place of all possible
Christel Montury

As a curator, this project is very different from what I’ve done before. Another culture, another place which is not usual to deal with and a distance at work which is not always easy but still very stimulating. However there is a close link with the previous shows that I have curated with Interior and the collectors. I’ve cofounded this art space in an apartment in which visitors could live surrounded by artworks for one or several nights. This problematic of inhabited space is almost the same in this idealized park. How could we live with artworks into a natural environment ? How this format of a garden is even more meaningful than any other standardized exhibition space ? Also artists are not so much invited to showcase outdoor artworks and this always takes an immersive dimension for the viewer.

The Pengshan District in Meishan city is a very good choice. This is both near and far from the city. We have more space and time to experiment and to contemplate. The speed of the city is not always ideal for creation time. Also it is very important to speak to a large audience and not only to the artistic or urban audience. Art is a system and this festival shows that initiatives are still possible to propose cross cultural exchanges from global to local in rural areas.

I’ve been involved as one of the curators of the show and I’ve invited Fabien Villon and Philippe Colin. I wanted to propose two different visions that would not only be aesthetics but meaningful. I Know Fabien’s work since many years and I thought that this landscape far away from the city was a perfect place to think about our relationship to progress and nature. He has been in touch with famous french philosopher and urbanist Paul Virilio (1932-2018) and has been very influenced by his reflexion about time passing, speed and perception of progress. I knew Fabien’s way of working with rearviews from cars, trucks and motorbikes and how he considers it as organic shells or eyes. For him this objects are not only mirrors but symbols and evidences of our perception of reality. He proposed a new set of three totemic sculptures for this show. Together, it creates a symbolic and metaphoric space in which the viewer can see himself in many distorted reflects of Meishian landscape. Even the sound of birds, wind and wild nature offers a contrast to this accumulation of temporalities. Verticality is also very important as each totem dialogues with the trees and blurs the boundaries between artificial and natural.

I’ve asked designer Philippe Colin to imagine a work that will deal with nature as an inhabited space. It’s important to offer to the viewer another interaction with another artistic language. As a designer, Philippe always thinks in between function, form, visual impact and constraints. He is used to work on 3D softwares and he creates everything in a virtual state of mind. In many essays, Jean Baudrillard (1929-2007) has anticipated how virtual reality is often mingled with unreality and how it always has to do with illusory landscapes. Philippe has created a sculpture that highlights the embryo of an inhabited space that is not fixed and moves following the position of the viewer. The starting point is the grid, from typographic grid to 3D grid, all of the architectural spaces in which we live in are conceived with this invisible structure. Turned into a sculpture, this becomes a kinetic experimentation that is always changing as an organic entity. It looks like nothing is never finished and defined.

In Europe, Land art is still designing this 70’s movement. That is to say artists working in the nature with nature as an expressive tool. I always think that Land art, as a great movement from the 70’s could be extended differently. For me, there are less constraints about the specificity of using nature as a way of working but more a way of thinking. This gives more freedom to the artists and a richer diversity of propositions for the viewers. Here, we have artworks made with natural materials but also steal, plastic, second hand materials, wastes, painting, sound… We could maybe call it ??earth art?? or a sculpture park, I don’t know, this is maybe not so important at the end. The important thing is to invite the viewer into an immersive experience and reflection.

I’m very concerned about the need of nature in an extreme urbanization with all this implicate. I wish this land festival will go on with several editions and keeps its specificities to showcase various forms of artworks. We need diversity, we need to be surprised, curious and have an open consciousness over the world we live in. This garden is a promising place of all possible. I hope to see another eclectic choice of artworks to give the viewer a chance to experiment many feelings and to reflect about the necessity to live with nature. That would be the force of this event and its originality on other festivals.
